DESIGNS
Twist ® DNA Synthesis Column

Five piece, double female luer, injection molded HPLC column assembly designed specifically to hold support media used for oligonucleotide synthesis.  Internal geometry was created to maximize flow area while minimizing areas of entrapment for contaminates between processing stages.  Screw closure design allows researchers safe and easy access to precious contents without cutting tools.  Utilized micro-porous plastic frit elements to allow passage of fluids while retaining powdered support media.

Back-Up Alert®

Challenging 11-piece assembly designed to fit in the space of an ordinary, 1156 style, single filament back up bulb, with an integrated audible cycling warning tone.  Utilized three high temperature injection molded parts, two wire form parts, two custom board mounted compression springs, one custom deep drawn stamping, a 20-watt halogen bulb and a specially developed piezo driving circuit.  Miniaturization of the structure while retaining strength, heat stability and piezo performance were paramount to solving this design.  Over one million have been produced and the product line continues to sell at an exciting pace.  This design won the Society of Plastics Engineers, Baltimore-Washington Chapter, 1991 Product of the Year Design Award.  The Back-Up Alert® product was chosen as one of the top ten automotive accessories for 1992 by Motor Trend magazine.  Patents have been issued to protect the technology used in this product.

K-10® Hose End Sprayer

Hose end sprayer assembly for household, lawn and garden use.  Design to be a modular assembly with many dilution combinations possible.  Novel design of components and production tooling enables production of several final products, including; a concentrated liquid dispensing sprayer with multiple dilution ratios, a dry mix “no-clog” dispensing sprayer, a combination concentrated liquid and dry mix “no-clog” dispensing sprayer.  All combinations permit the user to switch to a water only “rinse” position or to a water off position.  An independent industrial designer, contracted by the client, defined the sprayer exterior style and ergonomic handle.  Patents have been applied for, to protect the technologies used in this product.

GARCUP® Golf Cart Ashtray

This product is designed for use in the cup holder of all major golf cart manufacturers.  The exterior surface geometry provides a snug fit that won’t rattle or shake while in the cup holder.  The assembly includes two injection molded parts, molded from a high temperature, mineral filled material as well as one stainless steel spring component and one stainless steel wire-formed part.

K-5® Hose End Sprayer

Simplified version of the popular K-10® hose end sprayer.  Utilizes separate post valve spray tubes for improved flexibility in the modular tooling approach, enabling not only varying ratios of diluted products but differing flow rates as well.  Cost effective dual ratio from a single concentrate with a high flow rinse applicator.

Poly-Pak® Purification Cartridges

A filter type packed HPLC column assembly used for the rapid and efficient purification of synthetic oligonucleotides.  A four-piece assembly consisting of two injection molded case parts with two micro-porous frit elements.  Active filtering media is 20-micron average particle size, hence all fits are extremely critical in order to contain the 20-micron powdered media.  Filter assembly with one male and one female luer for use as a syringe end or vacuum manifold purification system.  Injection molded case assembly utilizes an annular snap ring method of assembly.

Omni-Jugs® Contaminated Fluid Collection System

A 15-liter vacuum assisted collection container system for use in the operating room.  Product had to be simple and easy to use yet completely sealed to prevent spillage and vacuum leaks.  Three injection molded parts, with integral closures are used to make this collection system complete for any OR procedure which produces large amounts of contaminated fluid waste.  Special arrangements of the fittings allow for cascading to additional containers and for the collection of tissue specimens when using the optional Specimen-Cap®.  U.S. Patent #5,792,126 protects this product.

Universal Transmitter

Rescue project.  This product enclosure was designed by a West Coast design build firm, who had bid on and received an order for the production tooling.  Only after receiving the order, did they inform the client that they could not make the tooling and parts as they had earlier indicated.  The client was stuck and needed help.  We were asked to look at the designs and to help find sources for the production tooling, all to be completed within 4 calendar weeks.  The upshot was that the case could not be molded as it was designed.  The undercut specified for the case closure was 5 times to large for the material as specified by the client.  We redesigned the enclosure, keeping the original style and exterior look and feel, produced complete working prints and files, found a quality molding and tooling source, coordinated the tooling effort and provided complete samples in the requested materials and colors within the 4 week window.

Sprayer / Applicator system for Noah® Deck & Fence Renewal System

Dual bottle and sprayer development program for diluting two different concentrates at two different ratios with two different flow rates.  Extremely tight dilution ration ranges for applying the deck cleaner and the water-soluble deck stain product.  Designed twin blow molded bottle set with features to mate with injection molded seal component as nested within the injection molded bottle closure as attached to the sprayer assembly.  Work with all vendors involved debugging delivery system.  ¼ Pallet display earned awards at the 1999 National Hardware Show.  Several U. S. and foriegn Patents applied for, to protect technologies used in this product.

50 watt Halogen Back-Up Bulb

Component design of one injection molded high temperature insulator and two contact stampings for a pressure contact assembly.  Utilizes 50 watt halogen bulb and standard 1156 style bulb base, with only one solder operation per assembly.  This design resulted in a 46% savings in assembly labor costs.

Christiana Candles® Exterior Decorative Window Candles

Developed 4-piece injection molded part assembly with two identical progressive die stampings.  Utilized off the shelf socket component and developed this easy to install novel decorative candle program.  U.S. Patent #5,829,869 protects this product.

RF Thermometer

Remote waterproof temperature sensor/transmitter enclosure and indoor receiver unit with display and controls define the system.  Remote transmitter/sensor unit consists of two injection molded case parts, which are assembled via friction fit with an o-ring seal and frit breather element.  Float accessory accepts remote transmitter/sensor and allows use in ponds and pools.  Receiver unit has dual read-out LCD display showing both indoor temperature and remote temperature.  Liquid silicone keypad controls allow user to set min/max alarms for both indoor and remote temperatures, as well as track min/max history with reset capabilities.  Our receiver case design has a user accessible battery door, a molded in keyslot that allows for wall mounting and comes with an integral desk stand.

Truck Tire Mounted RF Pressure Sensor

Differential pressure sensing device designed for use in heavy over the road trucking applications.  Sensor is strapped to the inside of the truck tire rim and contains in & out valves along with radio circuitry, battery means and the differential pressure switch.  The system is patented worldwide.  Differential cracking pressures for the in valve and out valve allow the sensor to be set, yielding a 2 PSI differential between the interior of the sensor device and the tire atmosphere.  As the tire pressure drops the sensor device pressure remains constant.  Switch is actuated when tire pressure has dropped 5-6 PSI below sensor interior pressure.  Once switch is actuated, battery power is supplied to radio and repeating code is sent to cab receiver indicating a low-pressure condition.

Clear Surface Mount Snow Guard

Quick turn around part design and tool fabrication project.  Heavy wall high strength injection molded plastic snow retention device.  Product to be used on steel roofing materials attached with adhesive.  Novel vent rib pattern allows adhesive to flow and cure uniformly.  Design and molds produced in less than four weeks.

TX7® Key Chain Transmitter Housing

Two piece snap together injection molded housing, with liquid silicone keypad and custom transmitter circuitry.  Many alternate external shapes, colors and design were reviewed for user.

Terminator® Portable Power Drain Cleaner

High strength portable power equipment housing for toilet and floor drain maintenance.  Injection molded outer housing with self-tapping screw closure.  Integral handle with pull actuator for valve switching operation – caused reversal form pressure to vacuum and vice versa.  Double insulated design for containing line voltage blower motor.  Suction throat designed with integrated float shut-off device.

Needle Guard® Single –Use Sharps Containment System

Single handed encapsulation of contaminated syringe or scalpel, via injection molded plastic sheath filled with a fluid, covered with a breakable membrane seal, which upon penetration by the syringe or scalpel would become a solid within seconds.  Research was done under SBIR grant and patents have been issued to protect the product.

Genie Cup II® On-Site Substance Abuse Test Kit

Multiple part injection molded plastic urine container with special lid actuated dispensing feature.  Patient fills cup with sample and installs lid to first mechanical stop as directed by nurse.  Nurse then checks temperature indicator for presence of valid sample and then turns lid another two turns until second mechanical stop.  During this two-turn step, the internal dispenser delivers a metered shot of the sample to the test chamber and seals and isolates the remaining initial sample.  This allows for a rapid on-site test with results and a sealed non-contaminated specimen, which can then be frozen and sent to a lab for redundant analysis.
